Gérard Cohen-Jonathan (1936-2014)

 

Emeritus professor of the University Panthéon-Assas and honorary Dean of the University of Strasbourg, Gérard Cohen-Jonathon was also honorary president of the International Institute of Human Rights (Cassin Institute, Strasbourg), after having served for fifteen years as the General Secretary of the French Organization for International Law (SFDI).

He was the founder and the first director of the CRDH. He passed away on May 21, 2014.

 

He was the author of numerous works and articles dedicated to International and European human rights law, notably La Convention européenne des droits de l’homme (Economica, 1989), Aspects européens des droits fondamentaux (3rd ed., 2002), and in 2004 he was offered two volumes of Mélanges under the title Libertés, Justice et Tolérance (Bruylant, 2004) on the occasion and in honor of his retirement.

 

Mario Bettati (1937-2017)

 

Emeritus professor of Université Paris II and honorary Dean of Université Paris Sud, Mario Bettati is the author of many works dedicated to international humanitarian law and to intervention law, notably Le droit d’ingérence, Odile Jacob, 1996, La Déclaration universelle des droits de l’homme (dir., avec Olivier Duhamel et Laurent Greilsamer, Gallimard-Folio, 2ème ed, 2008). He recently published Le droit international de l’environnement, Odile Jacob, 2012.

 

The former Vice-President of the National Consultative Commission for Human Rights (CNCDH) and former member of the Commission of International Public Service, he was the personal representative of the Minister of European and Foreign Affairs, Bernard Kouchner, until 2010.

 

He passed away on March 23rd, 2017.
